The Gym Group founder and CEO to stand down

1 Jun 2018

Richard Darwin has been appointed to take over as chief executive of The Gym Group in September, after three years as chief financial officer at the second-largest British budget club group.

This marks a major transition for The Gym Group since John Treharne, who established the group and led it for the last ten years, will stand down. The former England squash player will remain on the board as founder director to share the benefit of his many contacts and entrepreneurial wisdom, but The Gym Group states that Treharne wants to spend more time with his family and on his personal interests.

Penny Hughes, chairwoman of The Gym Group, hailed “John’s extraordinary achievement in pioneering the low cost fitness model and developing The Gym Group into the fastest growing company in the sector across Europe.”

Under Treharne’s leadership, the Gym Group expanded from a club in Hounslow to a listed fitness club operator with 133 gyms at the end of May. It reported sales of £91.4 million (€104.5m) with 128 clubs and 607,000 members at the end of 2017.
