The Gym Group multiplies sites and options

21 Mar 2018

The Gym Group has resolved to launch its upgraded membership offering across all of its gyms by the end of May, as a means for the budget operator to diversify its proposition and raise its yield.

The move was announced as the company reported a sales increase of 24.3 % to £91.4 million (€104.3m) for 2017. After the acquisition of 18 gyms from Lifestyle Fitness and another 21 openings, the group ended the year with 128 facilities. Its number of members jumped by 35.5% to 607,000, and the average price for membership increased by £0.5 to £17.50 (€20) for the year.

With that, the Gym Group claimed that it was the fastest-growing budget club operator in the U.K. It estimated that its share of the British low-cost fitness market reached 22.4% in December, up from 17.7% in March 2017, as it achieved two thirds of the estimated net site growth in the low-cost market in this period.

The Gym Group said last week that the number of members had increased by another 9.4% until the end of February, to reach 664,000 members. John Treharne, the group’s chief executive, added that it was on track to open another 15 to 20 gyms this year.
